Virginia Woolf had what I think might be one of the most beautiful profiles ever. Walking down the street, I think it would be extremely hard to find anyone that looks like her.
Janis Joplin had the most sincere smile ever.SO MUCH AWESOME IT HURTS. I hope I'll have the energy/wardrobe (over 2865 dresses, natch) to dress like her when I'm her age and older. Or now, even. WHY IS SHE SO COOL. Come to think of it, rather surprised Lula didn't mention her in their elderly and eccentric features in the most recent issue. When it comes to fashion, I like Anna Piaggi way more than the other Anna. You know, this one.
Confession: Never seen any of Sofia Coppola's movies, just know they're probably great and powerful because she simply looks like a very thoughtful woman.
Quite the personality, in case you didn't catch that. Vivienne Westwood is a genius in her designs, so genius that I just in fact typed lots of sentences about why she's great only to delete them because it can't be put into words. She is, in a way, an outsider in the industry and she really doesn't care. Check out the shirts she made in the 70's if you want to hear her views about fitting in!
Joni Mitchell taught herself how to play guitar, and none of this 60-year-old-men-on-youtube crap either. She tuned it until it felt right and made up her own chords. That huge wrinkle between her eyebrows in the first picture = caring about something and doing something about it.
I highly doubt Charlotte Gainsbourg has ever been considered unattractive. The thing is, she's so pretty you'd think she couldn't act. In fact, I never ever cry at movies (other than CLICK, that awful Adam Sandler comedy. Er.) but Char in I'm Not There completely changed that, even though her scenes were not exactly the saddest stuff you could put in a movie. Her voice itself singing Just Like a Woman on the soundtrack can make me tear up. She's magic, I swear! She can basically do anything, and is still super humble as far as I can tell. Also, her family is awesome. How could anyone with Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin as parents not be a superhero? Tell me!
Grace Jones seriously makes androgyny twenty billion times cooler than it already is. She just looks like someone that could throw you a few miles and then go put on any outfit she wants because she'd still look EPIC and do whatever she wanted just because she wouldn't be scared to. Even with a lazy eye I feel like she'd beat anyone at a blinking contest too. I doubt this chick ever flinches.
Rita Levi Montalcini is an Italian scientist about to turn 100 and is not retiring any time soon. Every single one of those wrinkles is from doing something great or looking at something in a new way. You can't look at this woman and not get the impression she's done lots to be proud of. If I were her grandkid I'd look forward to a sweater knit with brains every birthday. Actually, that's pretty gross, come to think of it. But you know what I mean.
Is it just me or is teh internetz more interested in Beth Ditto's weight than her actual music? Oh, she doesn't give a shit in case you haven't noticed. Just an FYI: "I just like food too much, and I don't want to change. I spent so much of childhood trying to change, and I just got sick of it. ... I don't want to look like Britney Spears. I just don't want to. She's hideous." Seriously, no person has this much confidence. Love her.
Ugh, talk about doing great things. Joan Baez is a singer/songwriter/musician known as the mother of folk as well as a political activist. She looks kind of angry or concerned or sad whenever she sings but considering the issues she touches on there's no reason for her not to be. Passionate and just great. When she was younger especially she looked kind of like a mysterious doll.
Patti Smith has hardly been known for her beauty, more her rugged masculinity. She doesn't hide it at all and there's no reason to, it's extremely unique and I can't look at these pictures without thinking how badly I'd rather she was my friend over any Taylor Swift character Seventeen hypes up.Mia Farrow. Try her pixie cut and YOU WILL FAIL. Sidenote: I've been told I resemble both her and Woody Allen, probably the two best compliments I've ever received. She also does lots of work for Darfur which only makes her 32423 times more respectable.
